What is the K1 fiancé visa?
The K1 visa lets the foreign fiancé(e) of a U.S. citizen enter the United States so the couple can marry. It is petitioned by the U.S. citizen on Form I-129F, and it exists for couples who are engaged rather than already married.
Per the Form I-129F Instructions, the couple must marry within 90 days of the fiancé(e)'s admission to the United States. The 90 days is a condition of the visa, not a target.
After the marriage, becoming a permanent resident is a separate step: the new spouse files for adjustment of status on Form I-485. That is its own filing with its own forms, fees, and evidence. We prepare the K1 petition itself.
Who qualifies for a K1 visa?
Per the Form I-129F Instructions, a K1 petition rests on the following. This is a restatement of what the instructions say, not an eligibility assessment of your case.
- The petitioner is a U.S. citizen. A lawful permanent resident (green card holder) cannot file Form I-129F.
- Both parties are legally free to marry, meaning every prior marriage has been legally terminated.
- The couple met in person within the two years before the petition is filed. The instructions describe limited exceptions, which USCIS decides.
- Both parties intend to marry within 90 days of the beneficiary entering the United States.

What documents do you need for Form I-129F?
A neutral restatement of what the Form I-129F Instructions call for. Every case is different and this list is not exhaustive, so treat the official instructions as the authority.
Proof of the petitioner's U.S. citizenship. A birth certificate, passport, certificate of naturalization, or consular report of birth abroad for the petitioning U.S. citizen.
Evidence the couple met in person. Documentation of an in-person meeting within the two years before filing, such as passport stamps, boarding passes, itineraries, or photographs together.
Statements of intent to marry. A signed statement from each party confirming the intention to marry within 90 days of the beneficiary's arrival in the United States.
Proof that prior marriages ended. For both parties, divorce decrees, annulment orders, or death certificates showing every earlier marriage was legally terminated.
Passport-style photos. One passport-style color photograph of each party, meeting the specifications in the form instructions.
Evidence of the relationship. Photographs together, communication records, travel documentation, and affidavits from people who know you as a couple.
Certified English translations. Per the USCIS form instructions, any document not in English needs a certified English translation, which can be combined with the document or uploaded separately.

How long does the K1 visa process take?
Two different timelines get conflated here, so it is worth separating them.
